Ask Dr. Diesburg: What kind of mouth guard should I buy for my child?

Dear Dr. D,
My kids are going back to school and starting up sports — football and basketball this year. What should we be doing in terms of mouth guards?
Thanks,
Carol in McMinnville

Dear Stacy,
All young athletes can benefit from wearing a mouth guard.

Commercial, ready-made mouth guards can be found at most general retailers and at sports stores (think Big Five sporting goods in McMinnville). These are relatively inexpensive but not as effective.

Amazon also offers a number of choices here.

If you (or your child) have braces or fixed bridgework I’d definitely suggest getting a custom mouthguard I make for you. In most cases, however, store-bought mouthguards are perfectly fine.
Happy Brushing!
